
Almost every regret we hear about home automation is the same regret: nobody asked the question while the walls were still open.
Clients usually raise automation late — after the layout is frozen, sometimes after the plaster. By then the useful options have quietly narrowed to whatever runs on batteries and Wi-Fi.
That is a real loss, because the expensive part of automation is never the device. It is the chase in the wall. Cutting a groove through finished plaster to pull one cable costs more in repair, paint and dust than the entire cable would have cost during civil work — and in a Delhi flat, it costs you a week of living in a construction site.
What follows is the checklist we run with clients before electrical conduiting begins. Nothing on it commits you to buying anything. It just keeps the doors open.
This is the single most consequential item on the page, and it costs almost nothing to get right.
Conventional Indian wiring brings only the live and the switched line to the switch box; the neutral goes straight to the fixture. Most smart switches need a neutral at the box to power their own electronics. Without one, you are restricted to a narrower set of devices, or to retrofit modules crammed behind the fitting.
Wi-Fi is fine for phones. It is a poor foundation for a house full of devices — particularly in Indian apartment buildings, where the 2.4 GHz band is congested with dozens of neighbouring networks and walls are solid brick rather than drywall.
Pull CAT6 to a handful of fixed points during civil work:
That central cabinet deserves a thought of its own. It needs a power socket, ventilation, and ideally not to be inside a sealed wardrobe. We usually place it in a utility area or a dedicated niche near the entrance.
Motorised curtains are the automation feature clients enjoy most and plan for least. The requirement is simple: a 5A power point at the curtain track level, at the side of the window, hidden behind the pelmet.
Decide this before the false ceiling and pelmet detail are finalised. Retrofitting a curtain motor to a finished pelmet usually means either a visible wire or opening the ceiling.
Occupancy and motion sensors work best in ceiling positions that get decided during the false-ceiling layout. Worth planning:
Video doorbells need power and, ideally, a wired connection at the main door. In flats this means coordinating with the building's existing intercom wiring; in independent homes it means planning a conduit from the gate to the house, which is a trench you do not want to dig twice.
Run a spare conduit along that route while the ground is already open. Empty conduit is the cheapest insurance in construction.
Most homes are wired one switch to one set of lights. Automation becomes far more useful when the circuits are split by function instead:

Splitting circuits costs a little more wire and one extra module. It is what makes the difference between a house with smart switches and a house that actually feels designed.
You do not have to install automation now. You do have to decide not to foreclose it. The minimum future-proofing that costs almost nothing today:
Do these five and you can add automation in year three for a fraction of what it would otherwise cost — with no chasing, no repainting and no argument.
The ecosystem question — which protocol, which brand — matters less than it used to, and it is also the part most likely to change between now and when you buy. That is another argument for getting the cabling right and the device decision late. Infrastructure outlives gadgets by a decade or more.
Automation planning is not about choosing devices. It is about spending a focused hour with your electrical contractor before conduiting starts, and writing five things into the drawing. That hour is worth more than any product you could buy afterwards.
